‘Wanking From Home’ Detective Jason Grafham Barred After Showing Sally Anne Bowman Murder Photographs

A former Metropolitan Police detective who made sexualised and discriminatory remarks to female colleagues and showed officers graphic photographs of murder victim Sally Anne Bowman has been placed on the police barred list.

Former Detective Sergeant Jason Grafham told one colleague that he had struggled during a mindfulness session because he had been trying to look up her skirt.

The same woman was later given a Christmas card containing a sexually explicit handwritten message. She said she felt disgusted and embarrassed after receiving it in front of her staff.

Grafham also told another female colleague that she would “look like a plasterer’s radio” after discussing work at her home. When she rejected an invitation to a concert because she had a broken foot, he called her a “stupid bint” and told her the VIP tickets included a seat.

He later suggested that she would be “wanking from home” after looking at her work calendar.

Another colleague was bending beneath her desk to plug in a heater when Grafham remarked that he had not brought his bike with him. She understood the comment to refer to the size of her buttocks and described it as shocking and inappropriate.

Grafham also made a remark linking a male colleague’s shirt to being gay.

Alongside the comments, Grafham kept papers and graphic crime-scene photographs from the 2005 murder of Sally Anne Bowman years after the investigation had closed.

He had no policing reason to possess or display the material but showed photographs of Ms Bowman’s body to other officers. Documents and photographs connected to the investigation were later recovered from his desk area.

Eight allegations were proven, covering sexualised and discriminatory comments and the improper retention and display of the murder photographs. A separate allegation that Grafham used a mock Welsh accent while making a sexual remark about a Welsh colleague was not proven.

His behavior was found to have breached the professional standards relating to Discreditable Conduct; Authority, Respect and Courtesy; and Equality and Diversity.

The proven conduct amounted to gross misconduct.

Commander Paul Trevers, who chaired the hearing, said dismissal without notice was the only proportionate and appropriate outcome. Because Grafham had already left the Metropolitan Police, the panel placed him on the police barred list.
