Detective Superintendent Paul Kessell, a senior officer with Devon & Cornwall Police, appeared today at Southampton Magistrates’ Court for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to drink-driving.
Detective Superintendent Kessell, who admitted to driving with an alcohol level more than three times the legal limit, has been banned from driving for 25 months and ordered to complete 120 hours of unpaid community service.
This sentencing comes with added gravity, as Detective Superintendent Kessell had previously served as the Head of Professional Standards. In 2022, he publicly condemned drink-driving within the police service, describing it as conduct that “brings discredit upon the police service” when addressing a separate incident involving another officer.
