Circumstances of Alleged Breaches

On 5 June 2019, PC Luke Pickett was on duty driving a marked police vehicle while responding to an emergency call. As he drove along Western Road, Mitcham a pedestrian stepped into the road and was struck by his vehicle. The pedestrian died at the scene.

It is alleged that PC Pickett drove at an excessive speed in an area where there were likely to be many pedestrians. Due to the manner of his driving, PC Pickett was unable to react in a timely manner to the potential risks and hazards present.

It is alleged that PC Pickett’s driving fell below the standard required of police response drivers and that in doing so he breached the Standards of Professional Behaviour in respect of Duties and Responsibilities
