The whatsapp group was joined by various officers and staff, using their personal mobile phones. The group was called The Rothbury Hot Tub, members of the public did not have access to the chat group.

On 10 November 2012, a member of the group posted a video to the chat group which had been obtained from the internet. The video was footage of a traveller funeral which had taken place in Bedford that day. This brought about a string of comments, posted by members of the chat group.

PC Cresswell was on a rest day and had not been on duty for the funeral. He engaged in the chat about the funeral, whilst at his home address.

During the course of the chat, one of the members of the group spoke about how dead animals had been displayed at the funeral and had been carried into the crematorium.

In response, PC Cresswell posted comments which were offensive and racist in nature.

PC Cresswell was immediately challenged by colleagues and the content of the chat string was reported to supervisors the following morning.
