Circumstances of Alleged Breaches
PC Jeffrey Cresswell was an officer on the Local Policing – Community Team, based at Halsey Road in Kempston.
Officers and PCSOs on the team formed a WhatsApp group using their personal mobile phones to enable them to keep in touch outside work. Members of the public did not have access to the chat group.
On 10 November 2021, a member of the group posted a video to the chat group which had been obtained from the internet. The video was footage of a traveller funeral which had taken place in Bedford that day. This brought about a string of comments, posted by members of the chat group.
PC Cresswell was on a rest day and had not been on duty for the funeral. He engaged in the chat about the funeral, whilst at his home address.
During the course of the chat, PC Cresswell posted comments which were alleged to be offensive and racist in nature.
PC Cresswell was immediately challenged by colleagues and the content of the chat string was reported to supervisors the following morning.
He has since resigned from the force.
